Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). Late A-type stars: new Strömgren photometric calibrations of absolute magnitudes from HIPPARCOS Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes have been used to derive aphotometric absolute magnitude calibration of main-sequence late A-typestars in terms of Strömgren photometric indices - accounting fortemperature, evolution and metallicity effects - and projectedequatorial rotational velocities. The derived calibrations are valid formain-sequence normal A3-A9 and metallic Am stars, showing residuals of0.22 and 0.20 magnitudes, respectively. One of the fitting methods used(BCES) allows the derivation of the observational ZAMS in this spectralrange, showing an excellent accordance with theoretical evolutionarymodels. The Angular Momentum of Main Sequence Stars and Its Relation to Stellar Activity Rotational velocities are reported for intermediate-mass main sequencestars it the field. The measurements are based on new, high S/N CCDspectra from the Coudé Feed Telescope of the Kitt Peak NationalObservatory. We analyze these rotation rates for a dependence on bothmass and age. We compare the average rotation speeds of the field starswith mean velocities for young stars in Orion, the Alpha Persei cluster,the Pleiades, and the Hyades. The average rotation speeds of stars moremassive than $\sim1.6$ \msun\experience little or no change during theevolutionary lifetimes of these stars on the zero age main sequence orwithin the main sequence band. Less massive stars in the range betwee n1.6\msun\ and 1.3\msun\ also show little decline in mean rotation ratewhile they are on the main sequence, and at most a factor of 2 decreasein velocity as they evolve off the main sequence. The {\it e}-foldingtime for the loss of angular momentum b y the latter group of stars isat least 1--2 billion years. This inferred characteristic time scale forspindown is far longer than the established rotational braking time forsolar-type stars with masses below $\sim1.3$ \msun. We conclude from acomparison of the trends in rotation with trends in chromospheric andcoronal activity that the overall decline in mean rotation speed alongthe main sequence, from $\sim2$ \msun\ down to $\sim1.3$ \msun, isimposed during the pre-main sequence phase of evolution, and that thispattern changes little thereafter while the star resides on the mainsequence. The magnetic activity implicated in the rotational spindown ofthe Sun and of similar stars during their main sequence lifetimes mus ttherefore play only a minor role in determining the rotation rates ofthe intermediate mass stars, either because a solar-like dynamo is weakor absent, or else the geometry of the magnetic field is appreciablyless effective in removing angular momentu m from these stars. The Photometric Variability of Sun-like Stars: Observations and Results, 1984--1995 Using differential Stromgren b, y photometry, we monitored thebrightness variations of 41 program stars and their 73 comparison starsfrom 1984 through 1995. The predominantly main-sequence program starsspanned ranges of temperature and mean chromospheric activity centeredon solar values. About 40% of all the stars showed measurablevariability, typically at levels below 0.01 mag (~1%), on bothnight-to-night and year-to-year timescales. The variability correlatedwith mean chromospheric activity and advancing spectral type. We presentdifferential light curves and statistical descriptions of ourobservations.

Properties of Sun-like Stars with Planets: 51 Pegasi, 47 Ursae Majoris, 70 Virginis, and HD 114762 Radial velocity variations have revealed planets orbiting 51 Peg, 47UMa, and 70 Vir, and a low-mass companion orbiting HD 114762. We analyzeparallel records of photometric measurements in Stromgren b and y andJohnson V, R, and I passbands and Ca II H and K fluxes in those stars.In the case of 51 Peg, the high precision of the differentialphotometric measurements made by the 0.75 m Automatic PhotoelectricTelescope and the nonvariability of the star would allow the detectionof a transit of a planet as small as Earth (corresponding to anamplitude of 0.0001 mag) if its orbit were nearly coplanar with our lineof sight. No transits were observed. For 51 Peg and 70 Vir, the upperlimit of nondetection of photometric variability at their companion'sorbital periods is Delta (b + y)/2 < 0.0002 +/- 0.0002 mag. For HD114762, it is Delta V < 0.0007 +/- 0.0004 mag. Such small amplitudesof photometric variability seem to eliminate periodic velocityvariations expected from p-mode oscillations. All four stars aremagnetically quiet; that is, they lack the typical Ca II and photometricvariability due to rotation and activity cycles expected from surfacemagnetic activity in solar-type stars. Such quiescence produces aninteresting observational bias that favors the detection of planets fromlow-amplitude radial velocity or photometric variations by minimizingthe contribution from intrinsic stellar variability. We discuss thecircumstances for which the probability of planet detections is improvedby the reduced level of variability from surface magnetic activity in Gand K stars. Stars with low variability in surface activity should bethe best candidates for planet searches using radial velocity andphotometric techniques. Searches for planets around younger, more activestars will be impeded by variations in velocity or brightness caused bytime-varying surface features. The Ca II H and K fluxes indicate thatall four stars are older than 5 Gyr. Ages were estimated from theaverage levels of Ca II H and K fluxes and an existing relationship ofthe decrease of Ca II fluxes with age on the lower main sequence andwere drawn from previous results based on theoretical isochrone fitting.Values of the projected rotational velocity, v sin i, are determined for70 Vir and 47 UMa from high-resolution spectra.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star,when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The early F-type stars - Refined classification, confrontation with Stromgren photometry, and the effects of rotation The classification for early F-type stars in the MK spectralclassification system presented by Gray and Garrison (1987) is refined.The effect of rotation on spectral classification and ubvy-betaphotometry of early F-type stars is examined. It is found that theclassical luminosity criterion, the 4417 A/4481 A ratio givesinconsistent results. It is shown that most of the stars in the DeltaDelphini class of metallic-line stars are either normal or areindistinguishable from proto-Am stars. It is suggested that thedesignation Delta Delphini should be dropped. The classifications arecompared with Stromgren photometry. The effects of rotation on thedelta-c1 index in the early-F field dwarfs is demonstrated.

Behaviour of OI triplet 7773 A. II - AP stars The behavior of the O I triplet at 7773 A in a sample of 74 Ap stars isanalyzed and compared with the results derived for a set of 50 normalstars. These abundance determinations are made in the NLTE frame byintroducing a correction to the LTE model atmosphere. Among the Apstars, the oxygen abundance varies greatly from one group to another andshows a clear separation between the different classes of peculiarities.An underabundance of up to a factor 400 is found for the (Sr-Cr-Eu)stars.

Lists of photometric AM candidates The Geneva photometric m parameter (Nicolet and Cramer, 1982) is used inorder to select Am photometric candidates from the Rufener (1981)catalogue. Two lists are given, the first containing field stars and thesecond cluster stars. According to the photometric criteria thediffusion process probably responsible for the Am phenomenon takes placerather quickly as Am candidates are present in young clusters. It isconfirmed that the phenomenon is enhanced by low rotational velocity andhigh metallicity. The age seems to slightly affect the Am phenomenon.

Spectral classification of middle-type supergiants in the photographic infrared A semiquantitative spectral classification scheme for middle-typesupergiant stars is presented which is wholly dependent on data in thenear infrared. The method involves the measurement of central depths asindicators of the strengths of the Paschen hydrogen lines 12 through 16,the Ca II infrared triplet and the 7774-A blend of O I, and was testedon slit spectrograms of previously classified stars of spectral types B8through G2. Results for the 142 stars considered are found to agree wellwith the MK spectral types determined previously, particularly inspectral types A5 through G0 and luminosity classes Ia through II.

Absolute luminosity calibration of Stroemgren's 'late group' A statistical parallax method based on the principle of maximumlikelihood is used to calibrate absolute luminosities for samples ofcooler stars constituting the 'late group' defined by Stromgren (1966).The samples examined include 415 stars of all luminosity classes and asubset comprising 86 main-sequence stars. Linear calibration relationsinvolving the Stromgren beta, (b-y), and bracketted c1 indices arederived which yield mean absolute magnitudes with an accuracy of 0.09magnitude for the overall sample and 0.13 magnitude for themain-sequence subsample. Several second-order relations are considered,and the results are compared with Crawford's (1975) calibrations as wellas with mean absolute magnitudes obtained from trigonometric parallaxes.The possible effect of interstellar absorption on the calibrationrelations is also investigated.
